Cyclone Disaster Relief

As you may know Burma (Myanmar) has had a recent catastrophe.
Cyclone Nargis slammed into the Delta region. Unofficial but credible estimates on the ground say that the total numbers of dead and of homeless from the cyclone now exceed those 2004 worldwide tsunami figures. Information trickling in from the villages in the Delta area indicates it is normal for a community to have lost 50-60% of its population by now. Many lives have been lost and a great number of people have been rendered homeless. In the most severely affected townships of the Ayeyarwady Division, UNDP assessment teams have indicated that urgent relief aid is needed. Food, clean water and temporary shelter need to be provided. Rice supplies are dwindling and the lack of clean drinking water is further compounding the already precarious health situation of many people. Water supplies have become brackish and are not treatable with standard water chlorination or purification technologies anymore. It is estimated that approximately 80 % of houses have collapsed in the severely affected regions,

We are urgently asking you for your donations. We are raising money to provide basic humanitarian relief efforts as soon as possible. Better Burmese Health Care members will arrive in Yangon this week (week beginning 5-11-2008) to help distribute aid & help with this daunting task.

While there are many International NGO's willing to help, they are having an incredibly difficult time obtaining Visas & Governmental co-operation. Better Burmese Health Care is positioned as a Burmese led, health focused, NGO, allowing us access to the Burmese doctors on the ground & an ability to see directly where aid & funds are most needed.

The already fragile Burmese infrastructure has been ripped away and a grave humanitarian disaster has happened. Now, this very minute, is the most crucial time to save the lives of thousands of Burmese people, by averting the real threat to life that the aftermath of the Cyclone brings. Electricity, water and basic food stuffs are in scarce supply and few have access to clean water.

We are in the process of mobilizing our resources and manpower in and around Yangon to help us identify and focus on areas most in need.

Your donations will go directly to supply safe drinking water through purification tablets, ceramic water filters and tanker delivery. Funds will also support acquisitions and distribution of basic medical supplies through an already established network of Better Burmese Healthcare clinics and other general practitioners. Finally, we are looking at obtaining and distributing large quantities of rice, a daily staple throughout the country.

It is in disastrous times like these that the world comes together as one people; we hope you can help in this extraordinary time of need. Every little bit helps. Please join us in our efforts to alleviate the effects of this tragedy and lend a hand to the people of Burma in a time of grave need.
